Redemption 87
Redemption 87 were an East Bay Hardcore band containing ex-members of Unit Pride, Skankin' Pickle, and Token Entry, and future members of AFI,The Nerve Agents, Blaqk Audio, and Said Radio. They released their first EP, The Spidey Sessions, in 1995, their eponymous debut LP in 1997, and their last LP, All Guns Poolside, in 1999.
Lars Frederiksen of Rancid had a hand in bringing the guys of R87 together, and had always wanted a punk band to go by the name Redemption 77, but the band was far more interested in recapturing the essence of the hardcore scene circa '87, so they went with Redemption 87. Their goal was to reclaim hardcore from the crossover, heavy metal music it had become and return it to its punk roots. They were heavily influenced by New York hardcore bands such as Sick of It All, Warzone, Gorilla Biscuits, Antidote, and Cro-Mags, but were perhaps most influenced by Connecticut's Youth of Today.
Guitarist Jade Puget would go on to join fellow East Bay Hardcore outfit AFI, and vocalist Eric Ozenne formed The Nerve Agents, alongside Timmy Stardust and Andy Outbreak, whose own bay area punk band, Model American, was beginning to end.
Redemption 87 played two reunion shows in 2004. 2007 would see Redemption 87 drummer Gary Gutfeld reunite with Eric Ozenne in Said Radio, which also contains Dante Sigona from Eric's post-R87 band, The Nerve Agents.
